At its 94th annual chamber dinner, the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce announced its person of the year for 2009. The 2009 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Traverse City's Dr. John Spencer. Spencer is a local pioneer in medicine, business, and also conservation. His work as an environmentalist prompted the chamber's involvement in environmental stewardship. At the age of 80, the doctor accepted his award with humor and gratitude. Spencer also thanked the Oleson family for providing him the opportunities to do what he loved.
