Slot machines are helping keep about 300 Northern Michigan families warm this year. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians announced almost a million dollars in grants. The money comes from slot machine revenues. The Father Fred Foundation is one of the 49 winners. It will get 75-thousand dollars to help with its utility shut-off program. That's 22 percent more than the band was able to give them last year. The Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau and Goodwill Industries will also receive money from the band.
