Charlevoix County Lawyer to Appeal Property Tax Ruling

The City of Charlevoix is taking a property tax case to the state Supreme Court and it could have a wide impact on cities across Michigan. In December, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled it was illegal for Charlevoix to raise the taxable value of a house after the death of a co-owner. The court says the value could not be uncapped because there was no new transfer of ownership. Charlevoix's lawyer says a loophole was created and is appealing. The case stems from a situation where a Charlevoix man was a joint tenant on a home's deed when his father died in 2005.
