Convicted Felon Arrested for Having Child Porn

A convicted felon who has only been out of prison for more than a year may be going back after police say they caught him with child porn. Even more startling — the suspect lives right next to a school playground. Police arrested Donald Weighman late last week at a home in Kalkaska. He lives right next to Cherry Street Intermediate School. Investigators say it appears Weighman downloaded child porn and transferred it to a storage device. Although he lives next to the playground, police say none of the pictures are of local kids. The Superintendent of Kalkaska Schools, Lee Sandy, found the news disturbing but was happy to hear police made an arrest. Teachers monitor kids during recess, but since it's a kid-friendly neighborhood, other people found the case troubling. “We love our kids and it's just unbelievable that anyone would even do that,” says Kevin Lupo, who has lived across from the school for more than 15 years. Lupo and other neighbors tell us kids play on the streets and sidewalks all the time. The case provides a not-so-subtle reminder for all communities. “Always keep an eye on your children,” says Trooper Rich Hall with the Kalkaska Post of the Michigan State Police. “Know where they are at all times.” 9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson have the story.
