Mt. Pleasant Police Arrest Ohio Man for Gift Card Scam

Police are calling it an organized scam ring; using gift cards loaded with stolen credit card information. That's why Mt. Pleasant Police say they arrested an Ohio man. Police arrested him Sunday after a tip from a Mt. Pleasant business. Police say Thomas Coates, Sr. used the stolen information to buy electronics, video games and more gift cards. They say he did this at several Mt. Pleasant businesses. The police chief says it's not surprising the suspect is from out of state. “These criminals, what they do is they move in quickly into a community, they make their fraudulent purchases, and move very quickly out of the community,” Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Anthony Gomez Mesquita said. Police say they were tipped off when several of the cards were rejected at a local business.
