6:00 pm Update: Investigators Narrow Down Possible Cause of St. Ignace Fire
Fire investigators believe a cigarette may have caused a fire that destroyed a downtown St. Ignace building and damaged another. The fire started early this morning, Wednesday, on North State Street. Bargains by the Shore is ruined, but the owner says he hopes to move somewhere else in town. Next door, the Secretary of State office is closed because of smoke and water damage. Seven apartments above the two businesses are either badly damaged or completely destroyed. Only two of those seven apartments had people living in them. One man got out on his own, but firefighters had to rescue a woman. They took her to the hospital, but she is out now and doing better. 9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Aaron Smith have more details after spending the day at the scene.
